UNEXPECTED

GRIFF had fallen asleep in the chair. The thump of the hospital room door closing woke him up and he started to a sitting position. A shadow fell across Howard and a delicate hand landed on Griff’s shoulder.

“Griff?” The soft, feminine whisper took a moment to place as he rubbed sleep from his eyes.

“Megan,” he said finally. “What are you doing here?”

A cup of steaming coffee appeared in his periphery and he realized he was staring at Howe’s still features, watching for the slightest sign of… well, of anything.

“Dragging your sorry ass home is what,” she informed him. “You can’t sit here indefinitely, babe.”

“I’m not leaving him alone. Where’s Don?”

“Having a nervous breakdown.” She joggled the cup of coffee.

“Thanks.” He took it, but didn’t open it.

“Your dad’s outside, Griff. He said he’d sit with Howe so I could take you home to get some proper rest.”

“I’m fine.”

“Griff.” She took him by the shoulder and forcibly pulled him around. “Don’s not fine. He’s freaking out and he needs you.”

Pulling away, Griff growled at her and rammed himself firmly into his chair. “He has all of you. Howe only has—”

“All of us, Griff—for God’s sake, would you pay attention!”

Startled, he finally looked up at her. She’d been crying. Hard and long by the looks of it.

“What happened?”

“Howe got in a smashup, you idiot,” she said, pointing to the bed. “My brother-in-law nearly died. And don’t even start to argue with me about it because even if he’s being a jerk about it, Howe is family, and my big brother is a complete shambles over him getting nearly killed, and he needs his lover, because I’m just his sister, and I’m not good enough for this. He needs you.”

“Your dad—”

“Stop it.”

“Stop what?”

She swallowed hard and clenched her fists, like she wanted to punch him and could barely hold herself back.

“Stop being thick,” Howe supplied. “Stop avoiding the hard stuff and go check on Don.”

“Hard stuff?” Griff turned on his lover. “Hard—”

He held up his bandaged arm as far as it would go and shook his head. “Don’t shit me, babe. I know you two are having issues. I am not your excuse. Go see him and make it better.”

“Howe—”

“I mean it, you stupid fuck.”

Griff’s eyes about bugged out at Howe, and a ghost of a smile crossed his lips.

“Go. Please. I know he won’t come here. So go see him for me and tell him it’s okay. I understand.”

What was he supposed to do? Refuse to deliver his message?

“Tell him I love him, Griff, yeah?”

Griff nodded. “Yeah. Fine.”

“Don’t be mad at him. He does the best he can, and remember, he doesn’t get pissed at you when you screw up, and you have. Plenty.”

Griff stared at him, uncomprehending until Howe offered a crooked sort of half grin.

“You want to talk about the Hawthorns?”

Griff said nothing.

“Thought so. Go see Don. Take care of him.”
